Sound!
Sound!
HORROR! In my last blog post I discussed the intricacies of our first filming session! Since then we have had 2 filming days total. And a continuing pattern Aden and I have found is a NEED for more sound. What is an essential aspect of horror? Sound! So, today I will be discussing the different choices of diegetic and non-diegetic sound that we will pay considerable attention to for our film opening.
To begin with, going into this we knew a considerable amount of non-diegetic sound would be needed to push the audience to understand the tone we are working to convey. However, let’s first begin with diegetic sound. For instance, from our very first shot we saw that the scream in our shot could not be capture at its full volume in the scene. Therefore, we will be overlaying a sound of screaming from a high quality mic that really captures our character, Ella, is feeling! This is an example of diegetic sound that we will be heightened, although, it is still fundamentally heard by the characters. Another example of diegetic sound will be the creaking of doors, moving of furniture, opening of mailbox, and footsteps. All of these this are occurring where the character may hear. We will be adding foley sounds to most of these little movements in sound to add depth and tension to the film opening. For instance, in our sound project a few months ago, we recorded footsteps with shoes tapping on the ground. We learned using creaking of a door to insert into the audio, in this case we will use it for the doors and mailbox creak. Another Foley noise will be moving of furniture, re-recording the audio with a higher quality to insert to ensure the audience can clearly hear it.
Furthermore, the non-diegetic sound (like music) is essential! We have two new tracks that we would love to include our story due to its overarching suspense. First of all, the audio file, “Scary Dark Cinematic for suspenseful moments”, by Pawel Feszczuk provided by Free music archives for personal and commercial use. It introduces a calming insert of terror into our film we will include ominous music leading up to the different scenes. The first inserted audience displays this, which we will use a cutaway transition between the establishing shots and cutting to the girl outside taking her dog out, and will transition do the diegetic sound in that film. We will use another audio file call “something scary is behind us”, by universfield provided by the free music archives for personal and commercial use for our jump-scare scene in the ending of our film. To create deeper connections of suspense and tension in the audience.
