Doing the foley!!

 FOLEY

WHEW!!! Let me tell you this was an experience. My wonderful partner, Aden, was on a trip to the University of Florida today. So I took the opportunity on my day off to work on our foley sounds! And, despite the distance, Aden has been SUPER helpful through encouragement and ideas for my foley recordings. Now let me get down to this PROCESS.

Starting with the recordings of the me walking outside talking out the dog. The footsteps were honestly a struggle. It seems extremely simple, just hit the shoes on the ground. On the contrary, you have to TIME these sound bites. Through trial and error, I used my IPAD to see the video and recorded the audio clip with my phone stepping on the concrete outside. You will see in the final product the mimicked steps. Aden will also go back and edit my foley to find anything out of sync I might have missed!

Next, I recorded new sounds for the door creaking and sliding coming inside from taking out the dog. This video sounded VERY hollow before adding this sound. So! I overlayed to audio recordings! One was my bedroom door creaking and the other was the back door sliding open. In my opinion, this turned out SUPER exciting to see. It turned a fairly bland scene to something that I think will definitely engage the audience.

Moreover, the next part of this foley was taking off the dog leash and putting it on the counter. For this the folly was extremely simple. I just re-recorded just the audio of taking the leash off my dog and then putting it on the counter. While this was simple, I again saw how much this audio added to the film opening quality.

Another aspect of the Foley was the mailbox creaking. I recorded this separately of me taking out the mail and closing the mailbox after! Which I’ll show you a picture of mailbox here that I took while doing the foley! Another part of the film was the front door creaking when closed by myself. Which I re-recorded and overlayed in the film for better audio as well. The bathroom curtain being drawn was re-recorded and overlayed, as well. And as you can see all the footsteps were re-recorded and overlayed throughout this film!!

The last part of this ENTIRE foley process I will mention will be the screaming and “glass breaking”. I tried and retried screaming for that foley but my voice simply couldn’t give the terrified scream I was going for in the outro. After 20 or so tries…and my voice burning. I ended up using a commercial free sound bite from program Cap Cut. This sounded and produced a much better scream than I could’ve for the end. And I ended up keeping the first scream of the original jump-scare ending. NOW…. This is BY FAR my favorite foley hack “the glass breaking”. How did I make the sound? Well! After a little bit of research. I found the a simple piece of ceramic wrap, a glass cup, and a key would make the sound! Below you can see the set up I used and after a few tries it made a QUITE convincing sound of glass breaking for our title sequence!!
